A semi-intensive unit, also known as a step-down unit or intermediate care unit, is a healthcare facility or section of a hospital that provides a level of care between the intensive care unit (ICU) and general ward. It is designed to monitor and treat patients who require a higher level of care than what is provided on a general ward but do not require the constant, specialized monitoring and interventions of an ICU. In a semi-intensive unit, patients may receive closer observation, specialized nursing care, and intermediate-level medical interventions. This level of care is typically appropriate for patients who are stable but still require a higher level of monitoring and support than can be provided on a general ward, helping them transition towards more independent care.
